Hilary, a 200 level student of the Michael and Cecilia Ibru University in Agbarha-Otor, Ughelli-North Local Government Area of Delta State, was reportedly shot dead by unidentified gunmen on May 8 who ambushed him with a motorcycle.
Hundreds of students of the institution reportedly staged a protest over the incident which caused pandemonium in the university community, and further blocked all access roads to the community. It was further learnt that the protest also led to the destruction of properties including vehicles belonging to commuters.
Confirming the incident, the Ibru University Public Relations Officer, Mr. Festus Anyasi, said the school management was yet to ascertain the identities of the killers, and doesn’t know if they were robbers or cultists.
“A student was shot, I do not know who shot him and if they are cultists, armed robbers or whoever, that we cannot confirm. So far, no arrest has been made in connection with the incident but the guy is in the hospital” he said.
This is coming few days after the Police in Nasarawa State Command, confirmed the killing of two students of the Federal University, Lafia by gunmen suspected to be armed robbers.
Kennedy Idirisu, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), confirmed the killing to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lafia, the state capital. He said the police got a report from the University’s Registrar that gunmen stormed the students’ village at Mararaba-Akunza, opposite the university gate at about 10:30 pm and shot sporadically.
Mr. Idirisu, a deputy superintendent of police, said when the police got there, two students had already been shot by the suspected robbers, who dispossessed others of their valuables and fled the scene.
The PPRO said one of the students died instantly, while the other later died at the hospital, adding that the remains of the two students have been deposited at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, Lafia.
